HAWC2 E-learning course

DTU Wind has developed an e-learning (virtual) training course in the aeroelastic code HAWC2 (Horizontal Axis Wind turbine simulation Code 2nd generation). The e-learning course is developed in the E-learning system ‘Itslearning’ and the total workload corresponds to approximately 2-3 weeks of full-time work. The online course runs as “on-demand” and can be started whenever it fits into the schedule. The course can be accessed here.

The HAWC2 e-learning course is developed within the project ‘Virtual Campus Hub’, which is partially funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme. DTU Wind Energy saw this as an opportunity to cater for some of our clients’ demands for being able to participate in HAWC2 training courses in their home country. With the HAWC2 e-learning course, participants will:

  • save time and money on travelling
  • have a flexible work schedule (course material accessible 24 hours a day)
  • have better time to complete the HAWC2 exercises and reflect over the findings
  • receive training from our team of experienced & highly qualified HAWC2 teachers

Participants

The course is intended for engineers, scientists and others, primarily working within the field of wind energy focus on wind turbine response, which requires a working knowledge of HAWC2 after acquiring a HAWC2 license.

Requirements

The HAWC2 e-learning course requires no specific skills or prior knowledge of aero-elasticity or wind energy conversion technology. Note that a PC with internet connection is required for working with accessing the e-learning course but HAWC2 can be executed offline.

Registration and course fee

The HAWC2 e-learning course is offered as a part of select HAWC2 licenses, which means that participants have to have a valid HAWC2 license in order to participate in the course. Information on how to acquire a HAWC2 license is found under the License tab.

Course description

The HAWC2 e-learning course aims at providing a theoretical analysis of sub-models in the code and also utilizing examples and exercises to gain practical experience using HAWC2. The course objectives are:

  1. Set up a HAWC2 model for simulation of a certain wind turbine. This includes correct input of geometry, elastic/ structural data, a model for gearbox / generator / shaft and control.
  2. Calculate the natural frequencies and to estimate the damping levels for the turbine.
  3. Customize a pitch variable speed control algorithm to the turbine.
  4. Include turbulence and important deterministic wind situations.
  5. Include hydrodynamic loads on substructures for offshore bottom fixed wind turbines.
  6. Describe the relevant load cases a modern turbine is dimensioned for.
  7. Validate the estimated time series and use them to extreme and fatigue analysis.

Course structure

The HAWC2 e-learning course is structured in thematic modules which contain recorded presentations of theoretical topics, hands-on exercises in HAWC2, self-assessment tests, discussion forums and various assignments.

The HAWC2 e-learning course consists of 9 modules, which should be completed one at a time before starting the next module. Participants should expect a workload of approximately 2-3 weeks of full-time workload that can be distributed freely over a certain time period, but it is recommended to complete the course within one month. After completing all the modules including all tests and assignments participants can obtain a certificate of participation or by taking an online examine (based on a case study) they can become certified HAWC2 users.

More details on the individual modules and learning objectives can be found here.
