NREL 5-MW Reference Wind Turbine

Release notes

NREL 5-MW Reference Wind Turbine v 2.0

The model is based on the fictive 5-MW reference wind turbine described by NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory). Version 2.0.

The controller implemented as a Dynamic Link Library (DLL) that uses “bladed2hawc.dll” as wrapper that reads the "DISCON.DLL". The "DISCON.DLL" contains the variable-speed generator torque and blade-pitch controller as implemented in GH Bladed-style. The controller is also described in:

Jonkman, J, Butterfield, S., Musial, W., and Scott, G., “Definition of a 5-MW Reference Wind Turbine for Offshore System Development,” NREL/TP-500-38060, Golden, CO: National Renewable Energy Laboratory, February 2009.

Version 2 changes:
  • Included aerodynamic drag on the tower and nacelle.
  • Deleted extra point in the pc-file.
  • Changed name of the outer profile (previously stated as a DU-profile) in the pc-file.
  • Corrected the position of the pitch axis in the htc-file (minor change).
  • Corrected the ae-file so it now reads all stated data.
  • Included a new dll (HHS_convert) that handles the reaction forces transferred by the gearbox to the tower top more correctly.
  • Change the shear-factor of the blades to 0.5 in the st-file.
  • Tower shadow corrected to fit actual height of the tower
